Read the following two words:
JURY DUTY.
Well, what came to mind? What was your reaction?
UGH?!
Sound familiar?
Yes, it happened to me. Last week I served two long days in the local courthouse waiting to see if I would be seated on a jury for a civil case. I sat and watched as the first 12 people in our group of 80 were placed in the jury box to be voir dire’d (you KNOW I had to look up how to spell THAT one). Many were excused for a number of various reasons. Those people were replaced and the process was repeated. Over and Over.
As I sat in the courtroom, I began to observe my fellow jurors. Young, old, students, retirees, businessmen and women, moms, dads. You get the gist.
Many things passed through my mind: What do these people do? I wonder how bored they are. Wow, that guy looks really unfriendly and disinterested. Hmm, that lady looks so timid and helpless. That man doesn’t look friendly either. I wonder if I can eat these M&M’s in here.
As these two days went on, I learned many of their stories while the attorneys interviewed them. Their occupations, political beliefs, religious affiliations, personal information about their family members. Things that even close friends may not share. It was surreal. It was interesting.
It was humbling.
How WRONG I’d been about so many. I’d made stupid assumptions. And based on what, exactly? Looks, mannerisms, moods. I mean seriously, how many times did I hear growing up “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” That is EXACTLY what I did.
I judged those people even if it wasn’t critically…by their COVERS.
Really?! Oh Snap.
I AM a (judge a book by it’s) Cover Girl!
I was impressed by many of these people. People who normally I may not have chosen to spend time with had we not been put in this situation. People who I may not have sought out to do business with. To have in MY business. The question occurred to me. If I had not actually MET these people but instead just been given their resumes (so to speak) about each of them, would it have been easier for me to be interested in working with them? In getting to know them?
The point Robin..C’mon now, get to it.
Don’t Judge.
In Life. In Business. Just Don’t Do It.
Unfortunately, I really do believe it’s in our nature to judge. Not that it is ok to do it…but we do. The first step towards being free of it though is to take ACCOUNTABILITY then step back and re-assess.
“That unfriendly guy? After talking to him on a break, turns out he had a rough morning getting his kids off to school plus taking care of clients before hustling it down to the courthouse. He was stressed and needed some time to sit and re-group. He actually seems pretty cool now.”
“That timid looking lady? How cool that she is working on her masters in Special Needs Education! Maybe she’s just not comfortable with the questions she’s being asked.”
These were some of the people around me that that I would be interested in joining my business. If I hadn’t gotten the opportunity I was put into, I probably would have thought twice about it. Epic Fail.
You will never know if a business prospect is in front of you til you KNOW.
And HOW will you know? By talking to them. Learning their story. Now you probably won’t have to get as thorough a story as I listened to these past few days but still…LISTEN. Ask questions. Learn about them. You may find a perfect fit for your business…your team.
Don’t be a cover girl (or guy) like I was this week.
I love these moments where I gain clarity and perspective.
And no, I did NOT get to eat those M&Ms in the courtroom.

This past week I attended our annual SendOutCards Convention. All I can say is Holy Appreciation Batman! I have never attended a conference where the emphasis was Giving To Others. The message was loud and clear:
Give. Make a difference in the lives of others. Help Others to Act On Their Promptings.
I heard story after story about people whose day was made so much better by receiving a card in the mail and people whose lives were so positively affected by simply receiving a loving card from someone who cared.
All you give is all you get….so Give It All You’ve Got! – Kathy Ireland
I came away from that convention with so much but one thing REALLY struck me:
The many many people who have succeeded in SendOutCards who were willing to share how they built their businesses, what worked for them and what didn’t, and even give away the ‘nuggets’ that really gave them an edge in our industry.
WHAT?!?!
People sharing what makes them successful? Giving away their secrets to help their ‘competition’ succeed? Never in my 20+ years in the business world have I seen such a thing on such a grand scale.
Is it just me or do you remember working with people who would rather give up their grandmother than share their trade secrets? Or they’d drop a nugget here or there but leave the most crucial piece of the puzzle so you’d never truly figure out what is driving their businesses forward?
Well, it didn’t happen at this convention my friends.
I met a couple who joined SOC just 11 MONTHS ago and have already EXPLODED their business exponentially. I also met a couple who did it in 4 MONTHS.
I met peers who have written books on their SOC successes and wanted to share them with their fellow distributors.
Yep. True story.
I sat down with one of them and had an in depth discussion on strategy and implementation, motivation, and using that moxie within ourselves to stay strong in your beliefs. Incredibly, they shared the ’inner cogs’ of their business.
(insert screeching to a halt brake sound) HUH?!
Why were they giving this information freely? Well my friends, when a company is built on the values of giving and helping others act on their promptings, naturally these values are instilled in it’s employees. It’s distributors. It’s customers. It’s a culture.
Luckily, these values have always resonated with me (Thanks Mom and Dad!). All I can say is it was truly liberating to see others feel the same way. It was empowering. It was motivating. It was inspiring.
Anyway, I devoured the information my new friends gave me. Who wouldn’t? Who wouldn’t incorporate new strategy to explode his business much more rapidly? No pride here my friends. I’m using it. And will share it with my SOC team and fellow distributors. Why not?
As stated in a song from a popular Disney movie that plays in our house over and over again “We’re all in this together..doo dee doo doo, doo dee doo doo” (Great now it’s stuck in my head)
By now you may be saying, “Robin, get to the point woman!”
My point is this…
GIVE.
SHARE.
LEARN.
This isn’t just a SOC thing. It’s about appreciation. Gratitude. Helping Others.
Help your fellow distributors or co-workers succeed!
After all, what you give out is what you get back….so apply this in YOUR business.
I believe it. My company believes it.
Do you?
If you keep on doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you’ve been getting – Linda Clemens

The word ‘teachable’ has been thrown around quite a bit lately. Is it just a buzz word? Someone told me recently, “I’m looking for people who are teachable to join my team.” It got me to thinking.
I can be stubborn. Sometimes I choose not to listen. Yes, I understand that these are not hallmarks of someone who loves to learn but hey, I am human. I am not perfect. Every once in awhile, that evil little monkey called ‘pride’ may get in the way of me soaking in that little nugget which may help my business continue to propel forward. Why? I don’t know. Maybe I just don’t want people to think I DON’T really know it all.
CRAZY.
How many of us think like this?
I WANT to be teachable. I don’t want pride to get in my way. I want to be the person who asks the ‘dumb’ questions. Why?
Because I WANT TO LEARN IT ALL.
He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever – Chinese Proverb
So true.
Don’t be afraid to ask those questions. Again. And again. Do it. Ask your mentors. Ask people who are succeeding in your business. Don’t be intimidated. Shoot them an email. Ask them a question on their facebook wall. Schedule a coaching session with them. After all, how do you think THEY rose to their success?
It wasn’t by just reading books, I guarantee you that. They did the same thing. ASKING and ASKING and ASKING followed by….
DOING, DOING, DOING!
Ask questions. Be teachable. Open your mind to new concepts, new ways of running your business, adaptations you can make, processes that can be improved. Face it. Change is awesome. Change is fun. Change is an adventure.
I am still learning. Every day I learn something new about this business. How cool is that?
“Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure.” Confucius
Huh, I think that guy may have been on to something….
